Insecurity: Gunman kills one in Rivers, security tightened at borders


A gunman suspected to be a cultist shot dead a man identified simply as Uzoma on Ojike Street, Mile One area of Diobu in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the deceased was shot when he came to buy something from a nearby supermarket around 10pm.

The source said the lone gunman disappeared into thin air after carrying out the act.

Our correspondent leant that the shooting might not be unconnected to the supremacy battle between members of the Deygbam and Iceland confraternities.

When contacted, the spokesman for the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident and said investigation was on to unravel the cause and apprehend the culprit.

Meanwhile, Security has been beefed up at the border between Rivers and Abia states near the Imo River in the Oyigbo Local Government Area.

There is also increased security around the Oyigbo Police Station and Army barracks on the Oyigbo-Aba Expressway.
Two checkpoints have also been mounted in front of the police station in Oyigbo.

Oyigbo recorded unrest and killings in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protest, which was hijacked by hoodlums.

The road leading to the state police command headquarters, Moscow Road and the one leading to the Abali Park Police Station were also blocked, as vehicles were forced to make a detour.

The security beef up might not be unconnected with the recent spare of killings targeted at security operatives in the state.
